其重要代表作包括《群體的形成》(The Making of a Group, Cambridge UP 1987)、《受苦在遠方》(Distant Suffering, Cambridge UP 1999)、《論正當化》(On Justification, 共同作者:Laurent Thévenot, Princeton UP 2006,已有日文版)、《胎兒的境況》(The Fetal Condition, Polity 2006)、《資本主義的新精神》(The new Spirit of Capitalism, 共同作者:Eve Chiapello, Verso 2005, 已有日文版及簡體中文版)、《論批判:解放的社會學》(On Critique, A Sociology of Emancipation, Polity 2011)、《愛與正義作為能力》(Love and Justice as Competences, Polity 2012),及《謎團與陰謀》(Mysteries and Conspiracies, Polity 2014, 即將出版)等。

Une enquête à propos d’enquêtes, Paris, Gallimard, 2012 )(即將出版英譯本:Mysteries and Conspiracies, Cambridge, Polity Press, 2014, Forthcoming)

Mysteries and Conspiracies: Detective novel, Paranoïa, and the Making of the Modern Subjectivity

This talk will address the thematics of mystery, conspiracy, and inquiry. It seeks to understand the prominent place these thematics have occupied in the representation of reality since the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It focuses, first, on works belonging to two literary genres intended for a broad public in which these thematics have been featured: crime novels and spy novels. Then, by developing the thematics of inquiry (which is at the heart of crime fiction) and the thematics of conspiracy (the main subject of espionage fiction), I will veers toward questions that concern not only the representation of reality in popular literature but also the new ways of problematising reality that have accompanied the development of the human sciences. These sciences have made inquiry their principal instrument. With regards to the human and social sciences, I have drawn material from three fields. First, psychiatry: at the dawn of the twentieth century, psychiatry invented a new nosological entity, paranoia, one of whose chief symptoms is the tendency to undertake interminable inquiries. Second, political science, whose has taken up the problematics of paranoia and displaced it from the psychic to the social level, looking on the tendency to explain historical events in terms of ‘conspiracy theories’. Third, sociology confronted to the problem of ‘social’ causality as a specific form to explain the behavior of persons, groups or even the course of history.

Towards an European Neo-conservatism? From the formation of an economy of authenticity to the renewal of nationalist ideologies

The implementation of neo-liberal policies in Europe, and their devastating results, have triggered, during the last ten years, numerous critical reactions, particularly in the intellectual and political fields. But this renewal of social critique has not yet had any concrete effect on the actions of the power elite, belonging to the left as well as to the right, whose members use the argument of “necessity” to justify their conservatism. On the other side, the critical stance has had only very weak support from the social movements and, particularly, the labor Unions, whose energies are absorbed by their efforts to survive. In the vacuum created by a demoralized Europe and by an ineffective social critique, there have emerged ideologies, coming from the extreme right and even, sometimes, from the left, that have shifted from the critique of economical neo-liberalism to the critique of political liberalism. They stress nationalism, supported by a strong State, and on the valorization of moral authority and tradition. They are, above all, strongly xenophobic and racist. One can see in the development of these ideologies the making of a kind of European neo-conservatism which, unlike the American neo-conservatism of the 1980-90’s, can present itself as “anti-capitalistic”.

This neo-conservatism is conditioned by socio-economic changes whose precise analysis seems particularly urgent. The first and most visible change is the decline of industry, which dismantles an “old” proletariat given over to unemployment and precariousness. The second change, no less important if less frequently noticed, is the development of new economic forms which create wealth by exploiting the patrimonialization of sites or “terroirs” whose “authentic” character is distorted by forms of commodification and/or through the extension of cultural industries of luxury brands. These two economic processes have political effects that promote reactionary and xenophobic positions. Groups and social classes whose interests are linked with industry accuse “foreigners” of “robbing” the work of the “real” French people. Groups and social classes involved in the process of patrimonialization accuse “foreigners” of polluting “authentic”, “ancestral” and national places and values.

The task of a leftist critique is then made more difficult by the necessity of a twofold orientation. It must go on with the critical analysis of neo-liberalism, but it must also be attentive to the reactionary drifts of certain attacks on liberalism.

Critical Sociology and Sociology of Critique. A Journey through French ‘style’ critique.

In that talk I will address questions which have been very unsettling for the sociological enterprise since its beginning, stemming from the very problematic relation between, on one hand, endeavours directed towards the making of scientific - i.e. objective or neutral -, descriptions of the social world, and, on the other, attempts aiming at modifying society by criticizing the state of affaires which has been depicted. I will, particularly, work out this question by comparing two theoretical approaches, implemented in French sociology during the last forty years, which have proposed two different path in order to manage passages between scientific exigencies and critical stances. Namely, first, what has been call Critical sociology - mainly represented by the work of Pierre Bourdieu -, implemented during the sixties and seventies, and, secondly, another stream, developed more recently, oriented towards the analysis of critical operations accomplished by ordinary people in the course of daily life, and frequently phrased as Pragmatic sociology of critic. In Critical sociology, descriptions in terms of power relations underscores the potency of mechanisms of oppression, the way the oppressed passively endure them. Pragmatic sociology, by contrast, describe the actions of human beings who rebel but who are endowed with the ability to rise up against domination and construct new interpretation of reality in the service of critical activity. I will finally try to outline a frame aiming at unifying the two different approaches proposed by the Critical sociology and by the Pragmatic sociology of critic.
