講者簡介：

Charles A. Laughlin is Weedon Chair of East Asian Studies at the University of Virginia. Born in Minneapolis, he received his B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from the University of Minnesota in 1988, and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Chinese Literature at Columbia University in 1996. He taught modern Chinese literature at Yale University for ten years, and then served as Resident Director of the PKU-Yale Joint Undergraduate Program at Beijing University (2006-2007) and the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing (2007-2009). Laughlin’s first book,Chinese Reportage:  The Aesthetics of Historical Experience, was published by Duke University Press in 2002, with a Chinese translation forthcoming.  He edited Contested Modernities in Chinese Literature (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005), and his latest book The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity was published by University of Hawai’i Press in April 2008.

羅福林(Charles A. Laughlin)出生於美國明尼阿波利斯市。 1988年畢業於明尼蘇達大學，獲“中國語言文學”學士， 1996年在哥倫比亞大學取得中國文學的博士學位。 1996年秋至2006年夏以中國現代文學專業執教於耶魯大學。 2006-2007任北大耶魯聯合本科項目第一任主任，2007年到2010年初任清華IUP中文中心美方主任。 2010年一月至今任弗吉尼亞大學東亞語文系中國文學教授和Weedon東亞學講座教授。主要研究著作有《中國報告文學：歷史經驗的審美》，2002年由杜克大學出版社出版，2005年編《中國文學：有爭議的現代性》，2008年四月由夏威夷大學出版社出關於中國現代散文的專著《小品文與中國的現代性》。中國文學翻譯有小說、散文、詩歌和論文分別出版在多種刊物和選集上。

演講內容：

Unfinished Comedy: Humor and Politics in Late 1950s Films

This paper examines three PRC films from the late 1950s, “Xin juzhang daolai zhi qian” (Before the Arrival of the New Bureau Chief, 1956), “Qiuchang fengbo” (Basketball Court Hullabaloo, 1957), and “Hua hao yue yuan” (“Happily Ever After,” 1958), based on Zhao Shuli’s short novel Sanli wan, to see how humor both creates and alleviates social tensions perceived in the new society, with particular attention to the depiction of leisure and its relation to work. Though these films were not influential, I argue that they reveal not only the political restrictions on film in the PRC, but also sincerely held viewpoints on how to construct the good life under socialism, and many of the problems involved.

未完成的喜劇：50年代末中國電影的幽默與政治

本次演講檢視三部50年代末期的中國電影：《新局長到來之前》（1956）、《球場風波》（1957）、根據趙樹理短篇小書《三里灣》改編的《花好月圓》（1958），從電影如何描繪「閒暇」及其和工作的關係，看見「幽默」同時創造和緩和了新社會的張力。儘管這幾部影片並不特別有影響力，但它們不只呈現了當時中國電影的政治限制，同時也真誠地保有對於在社會主義國家中建立美好生活的觀點，以及許多問題。
